The Newfoundland Dog Breed - Why Newfoundland Dogs Make Wonderful Pets
82Newfoundland dogs are a great breed for those looking for a large, friendly, family dog, watch dog or a dog for companionship. Newfoundlanders are wonderful with children and will protect them with their lives. One of my earliest childhood memories is of my Newfoundlander dog, Shauna, pulling me in a toboggan through the snow. This is why Newfoundlanders have earned the nickname “Gentle Giant.”
The Newfoundland breed shares mastiff characteristics. They have short legs, broad snouts, large heads and thick necks. They are a strong and sturdy breed much like the English Mastiff and St. Bernard. The Newfoundland breed originated in Newfoundland, Canada and throughout history various Newfoundland breeds have been used as work dogs to haul carts and other gear.

Newfoundlands are Amazing Swimmers
The Newfoundland loves the water and has webbed paws, making them fantastic swimmers. The Newfoundland dog is an excellent water rescue animal and kennel clubs hold Newfoundland Rescue Demonstrations. There are quite a few amazing stories of theNewfoundland dogs. For example, first officer William Murdoch of the “Titanic” owned aNewfoundland breed dog Rigel. Although William Murdoch did not survive the sinking of the ship, Rigel swam alongside a lifeboat for three hours and even alerted the Captain of the Carpathia of the survivors, preventing the ship from hitting them.
When it comes to training these wonderful creatures you will have no problem, as they are very intelligent. Once they learn a command they will remember it forever. The Newfoundland is a problem solver, which can sometimes be a problem. I have heard of these dogs watching someone open a door enough times that they figure out how to open it with their mouths.
Things To Consider Before Getting a Newfoundland Dog
Before you go out and purchase one of these cute, cuddly fur balls there are many things to consider. Is your home and yard large enough for one of these Giant Breed dogs? Females full grown will be a minimum of 120 pounds. Males usually are 130-150 pounds but keep in mind that there have been males that have hit the scales at over 200 pounds. That is a lot of dog. Newfoundland dogs have a lifespan of between 8-12 years.
You can expect a Newfoundland to shed a lot. Grooming is very important to keeping your dog looking good as well as keeping the hair from being all over your floor. The more you brush (should be done every two days) the less you will have to vacuum. Many Newfoundland dogs drool excessively, especially when it is hot outside. So be prepared to wipe drool off your clothing and walls as when they shake the drool flies.

Newfie Color Combinations
Newfoundland dogs come in different colors that include black, brown, gray, and the Landseer which can be a combination of black and white or brown, black and white. Newfoundland dogs do not mind the cold weather, in fact, they absolutely love the snow. Since they love to dig, you just may want to set aside a piece of your yard for them only.
